Discover local gems, can’t-miss adventures, and beachy fun from the folks who live it every day.
1. Stroll the Carolina Beach Boardwalk
A classic Carolina Beach experience, the boardwalk offers ocean views, vintage charm, arcade games, and of course — the famous Britt’s Donuts. Lines stretch down the boardwalk for their warm, sugary perfection. But the true sweet treat gem? Island Ice Factory. Among a sea of ice cream spots, this local favorite stands out — and if you're lucky, you’ll meet Phillip, the friendly owner whose South African accent and warm personality make every visit even sweeter. With creative flavors like honey lavender and banana pudding, plus legit dairy-free and sugar-free options that actually taste amazing. Ask about the souvenir cup — it's reusable for discounted refills both in the shop and at their beach cart.

Ranger Dana’s Tip: Go early in the morning for sunrise and Britt’s — then cool off later in the day with a scoop from Island Ice Factory. It’s a full-circle dessert day! You can soon take your souvenir cup to Surf’s Up Mini Golf (Opening June 2025) who will showcase Italian Ice from Island Ice Factory as part of their menu.
2. Take a GoBoat Adventure with Mozy Outdoors
Explore the waterways of Carolina Beach from a GoBoat — your personal mini boat that’s portable, easy to use, and doesn’t require a boating license. Whether cruising the Intracoastal or posting up on a sandbar, it’s the ultimate DIY water day.
Great places to launch include the small kayak ramp near the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher, which offers quick access to scenic marshes and wildlife, or the designated boat ramp inside Carolina Beach State Park, perfect for paddling into the Cape Fear River or toward nearby sandbars.
Rentals: You can rent GoBoats directly from Mozy Outdoors, with packages that include delivery, setup, and helpful tips for your trip. Visit mozyoutdoors.com or call Rob at 📞 (910) 216-0953 to book your adventure.

Ranger Dana’s Tip: Want to hunt for shark teeth? Launch from River Road Park just a bit further north and cruise to Shark Tooth Island for your own private fossil expedition. Don’t forget a Bluetooth speaker and a dry bag for your phone!
3. Visit Carolina Beach State Park & Sugarloaf Hill
Hike scenic trails, spot rare Venus flytraps in the wild, and launch a kayak into the Cape Fear River. The park is a peaceful escape from the busier beach areas and packed with natural wonders. If you're into birdwatching, this is one of the best places to spot migratory species.
A short hike up Sugarloaf Hill offers spectacular panoramic views of the island and the surrounding waters. This 50-foot hill is a local historical landmark, once used as a lookout point for coastal defense during the Civil War. It also played a key role in the development of Carolina Beach when it served as a station for trains that brought visitors to the area in the late 1800s. From the hill, visitors could watch the trains arrive, adding to the historical charm of the area.
Camping: The park also offers campgrounds for those who want to immerse themselves in nature. Whether you're staying in a tent or an RV, it's a great way to experience the outdoors while still being close to the beach. The Carolina Beach State Park offers both tent and RV sites, making it a perfect spot for nature lovers. If you're staying in the park, don't forget that Mozy Outdoors offers discounts on GoBoat rentals for campers! You can find more information about reservations and amenities on the North Carolina State Parks website.

Ranger Dana’s Tip: Look for the flytraps near the Flytrap Trail after a rainstorm — they’re easiest to spot then! Don’t forget to hike Sugarloaf Hill for the best views on the island and a peek into the area’s fascinating history!
4. Hit the Beach for a Classic Surf Day
Whether you're riding the waves or just soaking up the sun, Carolina Beach’s sandy shores deliver. Surfboards, boogie boards, and chairs are available from several local rental spots, so it’s easy to enjoy a fun day at the beach.
For the best surfwear and beach gear, check out Carolina Surf Brand — their selection of clothing is perfect for those who love the surf lifestyle and they are right on the boardwalk. The area directly in front of the boardwalk and hotels can get pretty busy, so if you're looking for a more peaceful spot to hang out, consider heading a little further down the beach or visiting the quiet southern end of Kure Beach near the State Park.
After a long surf session or beach day, you'll definitely want to refuel at Island Burger & Bites, a local favorite that just opened a new location. Known for having the best burger on any island, they serve up juicy patties, fresh toppings, and laid-back vibes that make it a post-beach must.

Ranger Dana’s Tip: The waves are usually best by Hamlet Ave. in the morning before the wind picks up. Don’t forget your zinc sunscreen! Afterward, head over to Island Burger & Bites and try my go-to: a double cheeseburger with bacon, mayo, lettuce, and a side of fries — absolute perfection!
5. Explore the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher
A great option for families or a break from the sun, the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher is home to sharks, sea turtles, otters, and interactive touch tanks. Exhibits blend entertainment with education and highlight the unique coastal ecosystems of North Carolina.
The surrounding area offers more than most visitors expect. Walk the scenic trails behind the building, or stop by the brand new Fort Fisher Visitors Center for a peek into the area's Civil War history and coastal heritage. If you're boating or kayaking, there's a small public launch nearby that’s ideal for exploring calm waters and spotting local wildlife.

Ranger Dana’s Tip: Want to meet a real Carolina Beach resident? Head to the aquarium’s first section and find the alligators — my spirit animal! These cold-blooded wonders are a must-see, and the exhibit’s albino alligator a great first stop when visiting.
6. Take the Ferry to Southport

Ranger Dana’s Tip: Sit on the top deck of the ferry for the best breeze and a chance to spot dolphins. If you're running late, bring cash for the ferry—it's quicker than using a debit or credit card, especially if you're at the end of the car line!
7. Catch a Free Outdoor Movie or Live Music
During the summer months, Carolina Beach offers the classic beach-town entertainment you’ve been dreaming of. The boardwalk comes alive with free concerts, fireworks, and movies under the stars. Every Wednesday night, enjoy a lively round of bingo, followed by a dazzling fireworks show on Thursday evenings right from the boardwalk.
For a more relaxed evening, head to Carolina Beach Lake Park for a free outdoor movie on Sunday nights. Bring your family and a picnic blanket, and enjoy a screening under the stars. Movies begin at dusk, making it a great way to unwind after a busy day at the beach. Before you head to the lake, stop by Veggie Wagon for fresh local produce, delicious snacks, and other treats — perfect for your movie night picnic.

Ranger Dana's Tip: Arrive early to get the best spot and bring a beach chair, bug spray, and a cooler with snacks.
For the schedule of movies at the lake, check out the Carolina Beach Rec. Dept here.
8. Try the Local Breweries & Tiki Bars
Carolina Beach has a variety of options for anyone looking to enjoy a refreshing drink with a side of ocean breeze. From laid-back spots like Good Hops Brewing to the quirky, legendary Fat Pelican, there’s something for everyone. The Ocean Grill & Tiki Bar offers a beachy atmosphere with cocktails and a relaxing view, and Carolina Beach Pier also boasts its own tiki bar where you can sip drinks with the waves crashing just a few steps away.

Ranger Dana's Tip: Make sure to check out Fat Pelican's walk-in cooler — it's a cool experience and a perfect escape from the heat!
9. Go Fishing Off the Pier
Cast a line or just enjoy the views from the historic Kure Beach Fishing Pier. It’s a relaxing way to experience the ocean breeze and watch the waves roll in. The pier is open at night for fishing, making it a perfect spot to catch the sunset or enjoy the peaceful evening waters.
If you're in need of fishing gear or supplies, check out Hooks and Arrows Supply, the new shop in town. They’ve got everything you need for a great day or night of fishing, they are located in the Food Lion shopping center with Coastal E-Bike.

Ranger Dana’s Tip: Sunsets from the end of the pier are Insta-worthy — bring your camera.

Carolina Beach and Kure Beach each offer unique disc golf experiences for enthusiasts of all levels.

The course offers a challenging layout with holes up to 500 feet and is set in a coastal environment with sandy terrain and beach trees. It's free to play and open daily from sunrise to sunset.
